The area
Swallow’s End is situated in the small hamlet of Low Town within the Coquet Valley surrounded by farmland and countryside, within walking distance of the village of Longframlington.
Longframlington is a traditional and friendly Northumbrian village. It has a pretty church, two excellent pubs, both serving good food, there is also a country house hotel, Embleton Hall, which has a bar and restaurant. There is an excellent butcher, a newsagents and a village shop which recently won best rural village shop in England. There is also an organic coffee shop perfect for a lazy breakfast.
Within walking distance there is another excellent and picturesque pub/restaurant situated down on the river Coquet, The Angles Arms, with beer garden and children’s play area.
The beautiful River Coquet flows through the very heart of the historic county of Northumberland. From the high Cheviots, through the Simonside Hills and the Rothbury Forest, it winds its way amongst some stunning countryside, much of it within the Northumberland National Park. There are marvellous views along the deep valley from the surrounding roads and farmland and many ancient bridges from which to get a closer look at the bubbling waters.
Seven miles to the west is the pretty Northumbrian village of Rothbury and the spectacular National Trust property Cragside House and Estate, the former home of Lord Armstrong.
Two minutes drive down in the valley and well worth a visit is Brinkburn Priory, which lies in a secluded and enchanting setting within a loop of the river Coquet. It is one of the finest early Gothic priory buildings in England and together with the newly restored Manor House makes a wonderful setting for the Brinkburn Music Festival which takes place from 2nd to the 11th July 2010.
